The approach
What couples therapy at Woollahra involves
Couples therapy is a structured, confidential space where both partners work with a therapist to understand the patterns in their relationship and practise new ways of communicating. Sessions are usually 50 to 80 minutes, and most couples attend together from the first appointment.
Our therapists use evidence-informed approaches including Emotionally Focused Therapy, Gottman Method principles and systemic family therapy. Which approach suits you depends on what brings you in, and your therapist will talk this through with you at the start.
Areas couples commonly bring to therapy
- Communication and recurring arguments
- Conflict management and de-escalation
- Infidelity and breaches of trust
- Disconnection and changes in intimacy
- Pre-marriage and early relationship counselling
- Parenting, blended families and life transitions
- Decisions about the future of the relationship, including separation

Common questions
Couples therapy in Woollahra: FAQ
Do both partners need to attend?
Couples therapy works with the relationship, so we ask that both partners attend where possible. If your partner is unsure, you are welcome to book an individual session to talk through your options first.
How long is a session and how often do couples come?
Standard sessions run for 50 minutes, with extended 80-minute sessions available for initial appointments or when you and your therapist agree more time is useful. Most couples start weekly or fortnightly and adjust from there.
What does the first session involve?
Your therapist will ask each of you what has brought you to therapy, how your relationship has developed, and what you would like to focus on. There is no expectation that you arrive with a clear plan. The first session is about understanding where you are.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly with us without a GP referral. If you have questions about rebates or fees for a specific practitioner, our intake team can talk you through them before you book.
Can we switch between in-person and online sessions?
Yes. Many couples attend in person at Woollahra and move to online sessions when travel, work or school holidays make it easier. Your therapist stays the same.
Is what we discuss confidential?
Yes. Our therapists work to the confidentiality standards of their professional registration. The limits of confidentiality, such as risk of harm, are explained at your first session and in our intake forms.
Ready to find out if we are the right fit?
Book an initial session at Woollahra, or request a complimentary 15-minute discovery call to ask questions before you decide.
Discovery call terms: a complimentary 15-minute phone call with a member of our intake team to discuss your needs and suitable therapists. It is not a therapy session and does not include clinical advice. Available to new enquiries only, subject to availability.
